Let me preface this by saying that I love me some

E. Jean

! I actually had the privilege of meeting her a year or so ago when I bought a Gilt deal to have a personal “therapy” session with her. She’s as brilliant in person as she is on paper. She was just as fierce and blunt as I expected her to be. Anyway, I read her column in the August issue of Elle this month and this time it hit home. In E. Jean's own words, here are the basics of what she deems the “BLC—Basic Lady Code:”

  • Never hate a woman you’ve never met
  • Never date a friend’s ex
  • Never reveal another female’s secret
  • Never leave an inebriated friend alone at a bar
  • Never invite a friend’s enemy to a party
  • Never dine alone with a friend’s boyfriend (unless it’s his last meal and he’s being shot a dawn)

While the above are rules you should abide by, the list that follows are some of the lines that must never be crossed. These are deemed the “AWC—Advanced Woman Code”:

  • Never stay silent when a friend is falling for an asshole
  • Never favorite a best friend’s bon mot [good word/phrase]—always retweet it
  • Never trust a girlfriend who dates a married man
  • Never steal your friend’s thunder at a dinner party—when she’s on, give her room! Pound the table! Bang your glass with a spoon! Laugh the loudest at her story
  • Never agree when your friend says she’s… [Basically fat, ugly, skinny, etc.]—tell her life is too short. Tell her to eat, drink and be merry
  • Never treat other women disrespectfully: It gives men ideas

Honestly, I think E. Jean can do no wrong. I personally believe and abide by all of these rules myself so it was refreshing to see that I’m not alone in thinking there are certain things your girls should never do or say. If you are with me—my super-bff and platonic boo, please see above.
